Pune-based mental health chain Jagruti raises Rs 28 crore from Alkemi, plans 40 centres and 4,000 beds

Pune-based Jagruti Rehabilitation Centre, which runs residential centres for mental health, addiction and dementia care, has raised Rs 28 crore in a Series A funding round led by Alkemi Growth Capital, a Delhi-based venture capital fund that invests in healthcare and consumer wellness.

The round is Jagruti’s first institutional funding.

Jagruti plans to use the capital to enter new geographies, add clinical and staff capacity, build specialised care programmes and deepen its partnerships with insurers and corporates.

It aims to grow to more than 40 centres and over 4,000 beds across Tier 1 and Tier 2 cities over the next three to four years.

From a 10-bed centre to 19 centres

Established in Pune in 2008 by psychiatrist Amar Shinde and Vijaya Shinde, Jagruti started as a 10-bed centre. Hemant Shinde joined the organisation as co-founder and CEO in 2019, leading its transition into a professionally managed network.

Jagruti had two centres in 2019 and now operates more than 19 centres across nine cities, including Pune, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Chennai. It has over 1,600 beds and more than 40 doctors.

The organisation said it has supported more than 82,000 individuals through programmes for mental health conditions, addiction and substance use disorders, and neurological care.

Its stated target would take the network to roughly 2.5 times its current bed count. The current network works out to about 84 beds per centre, while the target implies about 100 beds per centre on average.

Amar Shinde, who serves as founder and director, did his postgraduate training in psychiatry at BJ Medical College in Pune and later worked as a senior psychiatrist at the Regional Mental Hospital in Yerawada.

Jagruti offers treatment for alcohol and drug addiction, psychiatric care for conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depression and OCD, as well as dementia and elder care services.

“This first institutional investment is an important milestone in Jagruti’s journey. When we started in 2008, our focus was on creating a space where individuals and families could access structured, compassionate, and clinically guided care,” Amar Shinde said.

“This funding allows us to build on that foundation and make quality rehabilitation and mental healthcare accessible to many more individuals and families across India,” he added.

Why Alkemi backed it

The deal is Alkemi’s first investment in mental health and rehabilitation within healthcare delivery.

“Mental health is one of the largest and least institutionalised gaps in Indian healthcare. Jagruti has built a trusted brand in mental health, rehabilitation and elder care by delivering psychiatrist-led care to a consistent clinical standard, at prices middle-income families can afford,” said Alka Goel, founder and managing partner of Alkemi Growth Capital.

“Before taking any outside capital, Jagruti had already replicated that model across nine cities with a professional management team behind it. That is the hardest part of building a healthcare services platform,” Goel said.

She added that the fund believes Jagruti “can become the leading healthcare delivery single speciality chain in India’s mental health, rehab, and elder care segment.”

The funding comes as demand rises for structured, clinically led rehabilitation and mental healthcare. The sector remains fragmented, with most care delivered through standalone clinics and small independent establishments.

According to the National Mental Health Survey 2015-16, between 70% and 92% of people living with mental illness in India receive no formal treatment, as summarised in a 2025 policy paper on India’s mental health treatment gap.

The same paper cites World Health Organization estimates of about 0.75 psychiatrists per 100,000 people in India, below the recommended minimum of one per 100,000.
